Determining what's work appropriate and what's not is getting harder and harder. What with work place dressing rules constantly changing we thought it would be helpful to go over the rules that haven't changed. Below are our top ten guidelines for work appropriate dressing. Caveat: These are general guidelines, some workplaces may be much more casual and allow the breaking of all of the below. We still recommend sticking with these to make sure you're getting attention for all the RIGHT reasons.
1. Spaghetti straps are a no-go
Make sure the majority of your shoulders and back are covered but note you can layer! Feel free to rock cami-style tops for happy hour and beyond just keep them clear of the office.
2. Skirt length should be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee
Let's just say this way it's easier to avoid more excessive unintended exposure.
3. Layers are recommended
Vests, Blazers, Cardigans, Jackets, Scarves ... all great options for layering. This is a great way to add flavor to your look AND a practical way to handle changeable weather and offices that are not always at optimal temperature.
4. Cleavage should be kept to a minimum
You don't need to go full turtleneck but keep that cleavage in check, at least until after hours ;)
5. No work out gear
If you wear it to the gym then chances are it's not appropriate for work. Seems like a no-brainer but we had to say it! Sneakers, ratty t-shirts, tights etc. If it's made it to the gym it shouldn't be re-born for the office.
6. A tidy t-shirt might be ok!
There are "nice" t-shirts that are work appropriate. Look for block colour and simple styles. Avoid the overly patterned/graphic prints.
Depending on your work place jeans may get a pass, especially on a Casual Friday! Stay on the safe side by avoiding, overly distressed, ripped, and "low-riding" styles. Takes things up a notch by pairing with more classic pieces like the Issue 01 Blazer and Shirt.
8. Hoods and Fleece
Just don't go there.
9. Leave your thong(s) at home
Flip flops are not going to cut it for work even for the commute. Get yourself a good pair of flats for when you need to walk and if you have to step it up into a heel then make sure it's something you can walk in. There is nothing worse than wobbling around the office.
And a friendly note on the "other" thong... no one should know about it! Keep your outerwear covering your underwear at all times. Low slung pants should be relegated to weekend wear.
10. Extra polish never goes astray
Never underestimate the importance of the finishing touches. Things like; tidy nails, un-wrinkled clothing, un-scuffed shoes, and all those little things make a big difference. Don't skip these small steps and you'll always looked polished and ready to take on the world. For more on looking polished with ease, check out our next blog post, here.
